About us

Hutton Rudby Tennis Club was formed in Sept 1979. The original small pavilion with three courts opened at a cost of £2000 to members with a grant of £4000 from Hambleton District Sports and Recreation council and chairman Keith Beckton.

1985 -the new current pavilion was transported from Tees Dock as a gift from John Clarke, a friend of Keith Becktons and settled in at a cost of £6000 to the club with a gift of £400 from the bowls club. The partitioning and electrics were installed by Norman Kitching and Ernie Smith but Manpower Services provided the drainage, paths, concreting and ancillary work.

Sept 1987- official opening, largely down to Keith's hard work with the support of John Taylor the then chairman. Keith was made President of the club in recognition.

1997- the pavilion was extended at the tennis end to provide wheelchair access and a toilet facility and the existing patio was finished with a BBQ. After a successful lottery bid for £48,119.00 and LTA £10,000.00 loan, the club succeeded in expanding to 5 courts with artificial grass on three and floodlights by investing an additional £40,000.00 of members capital. Brian Edmondson and Keith engineered the project. Refurbishment of the inside was shared with the bowls club who kindly contributed £2,400.00.

2000- Geof Naisby was asked to take on the chair and carry the existing work forward. Since then we have focused largely on the encouragement of youngsters by regular coaching (Sue Bedford with Pam Dodds, with professional coach Derek Edwards) and keeping the joining fees to a minimum to allow membership of the club by the majority of families in Hutton Rudby and the surrounding villages.

More recently we have had great social committee success by combining our three Sunday American tournaments with a bring your own BBQ and involving the Kings Head pub in providing paella and curry evenings (thanks to Mick Hannon with his group of zealots).

The smooth running of the club takes part as a result of the continuity provided by our secretary Jane Simpson with assistance from Christine Devereux (memberships) and treasurer Mike Holmes.
